That duality was necessary to chart the evolution of the protagonist, who initially “wanted to express himself very flamboyantly and very feminine but was still navigating how to do that in the context of a relationship, in the context of work, and in the context of being out in the world as an adult,” explains Miss Benny. While he uses his makeup and wardrobe as a form of self-expression, Marco puts on a different character every time he leaves the house as an act of self-protection against the rest of the world. “The journey is extraordinarily poignant to me, and I think that’s all due to Benny’s experience and perspective.”ĭressed in a white-collar shirt with a red sweater vest, Miss Benny is affable and articulate, speaking with a self-assuredness that her on-screen counterpart has yet to master. “I’m obviously obsessed with Benny in real life, and as the season progresses, you get to see more and more of her coming through, especially as Marco becomes more comfortable and confident in who they are,” Phillips tells Shondaland. “Sometimes, because there’s not much of a guidebook for how to navigate queer adulthood, you might date the wrong people, and you might take the wrong opportunity or say the wrong thing, and I think it was really important that we see Marco stumble a lot and find his footing.”įor Zane Phillips, who plays Chad, Madolyn’s haughty and approval-seeking sales director son, Miss Benny was able to bring a “mix of anxiety and poise that comes from moving through a heteronormative world” that seems true to the lives of many queer people. “What was really important to us was that Marco came into it very bold and confident, but very clearly at the beginning of queer adulthood,” says Miss Benny, who wanted Marco to discover and stay firm in his identity while navigating new relationships. Naturally, the role, which now finds the actor playing an aspiring beauty influencer named Marco Mejia who lands an assistant job working for the legendary makeup mogul Madolyn Addison (Kim Cattrall), evolved to reflect many of Miss Benny’s own life experiences. When the pilot wasn’t picked up, Miss Benny, the lone original cast member to stay attached to the project, worked closely with executive producers Jordon Nardino and Kameron Tarlow to retool the premise until the show landed at Netflix last April. Back in early 2019, the actor was first approached about starring in a new CW show about a gender-nonconforming high school graduate who lands an internship at a cosmetics company. It’s a moment that, to put it simply, has been years in the making.
